Disco-
a)One of the interesting foundations for Disco music was the reserved social norms in the 60s. During the beginning of the decade, homosexuality and other preferences were looked down upon by the public and media, so gays would go to underground nightclubs to dance and celebrate their freedom. A lot of disco music started to gain a popular trend throughout the U.S, and a lot of the genre deals with acceptance of all people.
b)There are several origins of Disco in the U.S, the three major ones being New York, Chicago, and Miami. Each city had different styles and approaches to Disco.
c)Due to the 60s revolution with Disco, sexual expression and drug use became much more accepted during music events like Disco clubs, and STD's started trending and spreading very quickly. At the time, people had less knowledge of diseases like these or were less informed about them, and it killed many people.
Metal-a)As metal grew massive popularity in the 80s, MTV started to play metal videos and gained mainstream for groups and bands.
b)There was a lot of rivalries in Rock n' Roll. There were many fights between fans from different Rock bands and groups. One of the people interviewed on the documentary even said that he threatened to kill a man because he was harassing his wife.
c)A major result for decline in Metal bands during the 80s was that groups would overindulge in an expensive lifestyle and cause them to become in massive debt. This lead to the scattering of many popular bands.
80s Pop-a)Pop in the 80s celebrated a lot of the success and good times experienced by the wealthy, but there was a lot of artists that also emphasized the need for financial restructure for the many people that lived in poverty.
b)MTV gained its popularity in the 80s, and it received criticism because people thought that music videos took away from the music itself, and that it was killing radio stars.
c)In addition to poverty being addressed, rising issues like STD's and excessive drug use in America were also being addressed in songs.
Grunge-a)One of the biggest stars in Punk Rock and Grunge, Kurt Cobain committed suicide on April 8, 1994.
b)Despite that Nirvana was one of the most commercially successful Punk Bands in the late 80s and 90s, they spent a decade performing before they gained massive popularity.
c)One of the major reasons why Nirvana was so popular was because how well the performers' personalities and music connected with the adolescent audiences listening to them.
Hip Hop-a)Hip Hop originates to the Bronx, where poverty was at an all time high in the 1980s. The music that people created helped them cope with the financial crisis that surrounded them.
b)The average person on the Forbes Hip Hop Kings list has made around 25 million a year, which adds up to a total of 4.5 billion dollars in the past decade.
c)Many Hip Hop cash kings have started to recognize the founding fathers of Hip Hop, for instance, Macklemore's piece, "Downtown", he included Hip Hop giants like Grandmaster Cas, Como De, and Nelly Mel.
1) Disco started in New York and spread to Miami, Chicago and the other major cities in the U.S. Each city had different sounds of disco; for an example Philadelphia's disco sound had a more sophisticated tone with strings, otherwise known as "classical disco". Cities like Miami's sound was heavily based on captivating grooves and melodies. One of the big instigators for disco at the time was how society was shaped in the 60s. One of the interviewees said that coming out as gay was looked down upon in the 60s, so gay couples would go to night clubs were they could dance. Eventually, a whole spectrum of sexualities and races were seen upon the dance floor, the music that was played "...was something that we all need during this time of darkness" (Disco-Mentary). Eventually by the 70s, Disco had made it into the mainstream, being consistently played on records and the radio.
2) By the late 80s, many Heavy Metal artists say that they overindulged and the lifestyle stopped becoming fun as a result. The bands would spend all their money, and if they stopped making income at a steady rate, they would be in serious debt. One of the artists said that he had to sell his mansion and rent out an apartment because of how much debt him and his band was in.
3)Despite that MTV was massively popular to the mainstream audiences in the 80s, it received a lot of controversy and criticism. People said that it destroyed the individual's response to the song, and that visual image takes the listeners imagination away. However, it was perceived at the time that video was killing the radio star, but many musicians made famous from radio who agreed to do music videos for MTV gave their music a direct gateway to mainstream audience and even more popularity.
4)Many of the decade's biggest stars gained success by giving voice to the economic and political issues in the U.S. Artists like Tracey Chapman hit it big about song dealing with the poverty in America. Her optimism about the need for social changes evoked the the revolutionary spirit of the 60s.
5)Grunge-Rock bands like Nirvana became so commercially successful because of how their music connected to their audience and how well the audience was able to relate to their pieces and the performers. One of the commentators said that "...and here is a guy who looks like them, comes from them, sings for them, sings about them and to them, and all of a sudden, you have a Nirvana shirt on".
6)A lot of the political issues concerning the Bronx were was one of the major foundational elements for the culture of Hip Hop. One of the interviewees said that people in this area of NYC created Hip Hop to cope with the hard times of poverty and other economic issues. Another person in the documentary said that the four major elements of Hip Hop culture consists of DJ'ing, MC'ing, breakdancing, and graffiti.
1)Between 1960 through 1963, the Beatles work rigorously to earn basic necessities. playing both day and night and performing lengthy residencies in Hamburg. They spent a lot of time working on their group sound play several sets of repertoire a night and fine tuning their skills that captivated the audiences on the dance floor. From 1961 to 1962, the Beatles moved at a frenetic pace, rarely taking a night off. Hours went in collecting records, playing songs., working on vocal harmonies, and composing their own songs. The Beatles released their debut album Please Please Me after several years of hard work and dedication; George Harrison wasn't even 20 at the time when the album got released.
2)While many teenagers went into the work force during WW1 and WW2, many teens of the 50s and the 60s experienced new independence, enjoying more leisure time and spending. When the Beatles appeared as guests on the Ed Sullivan Show in America, young people saw something new: a pop act that had a group, that seemed close, like peers. The Beatles image appealed to a lot of adolescents, many of whom wanted to form their own groups or gangs. Rock bands popped up everywhere across the country after the Ed Sullivan performance.
3)One of the iconic and famous things the Beatles are known for is their "look" and their humorous and approachable style. When the band had first formed in the late 1950s, they dressed like typical teenagers, and their manager Brian Epstein suggested they wear suits with ties in the mid 1960s, which they did. Over the course of the time in the band, The Beatles changed their styles depending on how the world changed. Gradually, each member developed their own style; they would wear psychedelic clothes that exemplified new trends, changed their hairstyles, and grew mustaches and beards.
4)From the time the band had formed, all of the members were studying African American music such as American Rhythm and Blues, Southern Soul, Motown, etc. Many of the covers that they recorded early were predominantly songs that were composed and made famous by African Americans. Also, when the Beatles toured America, they explicitly stated that they would not perform for segregated audiences.
5)The Beatles received a crucial amount of helpful guidance from their manager, Brain Epstein. In a documentary, Paul McCartney states that "He had a vision of us that was beyond the vision we had of ourselves". Producer George Martin was a self described "schoolmaster" top the Beatles when they recorded their first albums, he helped the Beatles discover their creative potential in the recording studio and on the stage.
6)By 1966, the Beatles were long finished with multi night theatre engagements and were taking the stage now at sports stadiums. There were many technical issues and physical dangers that The Beatles faced which made them very wary of touring at the end of Summer in 1966. If it rained, they could possibly face actual electrocution, and the roaring sounds of the audience displaced the poor microphones that they used at the time. Audiences would swarm them everywhere they went, from blocking roads and rushing over to their vehicles every chance they got. Eventually, The Beatles announced they would no longer tour and spend their time composing new material in the studio.
